ITIN Application for LLC Owners: Form W-7 Preparation
An ITIN application for LLC owners starts with the individual's qualifying federal tax purpose, not simply the fact that a company exists. An ITIN is for a person who needs a US taxpayer identification number but is not eligible for an SSN. The LLC's EIN serves a different purpose.

Before paying for an application service, identify why the individual needs the number and which application category applies. A provider requesting a number does not automatically establish IRS eligibility for issuing it.
ITIN application for LLC owners: confirm the reason first
The IRS describes ITINs as tax-processing numbers and explains eligibility and application requirements. An ITIN does not provide work authorization or change immigration status. IRS ITIN overview.
If you are unsure which number is needed, start with our ITIN versus EIN guide. Do not submit a personal-number application to solve a company-record problem that actually requires the EIN confirmation letter.
Determine SSN eligibility
An ITIN is not an alternative selected merely because it seems easier. Review whether you are eligible for an SSN before following the ITIN route.
Identify the federal tax purpose
Write down the return, reporting need or applicable exception supporting the request. The IRS specifically addresses federal tax purpose in its ITIN application FAQs.
Prepare Form W-7 with the correct supporting package
The ordinary process involves Form W-7, required identity and foreign-status evidence, and a federal tax return unless a documented exception applies. The current W-7 instructions explain the reasons for applying and the exception requirements. IRS Form W-7 instructions.
Do not assume an exception applies because you do not want to file a return. Have the actual facts reviewed and provide the documents required for the specific route.
| Preparation item | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Application reason | The selected category fits the individual's facts |
| Name and dates | Match the supporting identity records |
| Mailing details | Provide a reliable address for correspondence |
| Tax return or exception | Include the correct supporting documentation |
| Identity evidence | Meets the current IRS format and certification rules |
Choose the submission route carefully
The IRS describes mail submission, designated Taxpayer Assistance Center appointments and assistance through Certifying Acceptance Agents, including agents abroad. Original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency can be relevant, depending on the route and requirements. IRS guidance on obtaining an ITIN abroad.
Protect important original documents
If you need a passport for travel, plan the timing and document-verification route before mailing it. Do not assume an ordinary photocopy or any notarized copy meets the IRS requirement.
Verify the service being purchased
Ask what the provider does, whether a qualified acceptance-agent process is involved, what documents you must supply and how correspondence is handled. No private service controls the IRS's decision or can promise a number without an eligible basis.
Coordinate the application with tax filing
When a return is required with the application, follow the IRS instructions for submitting the combined package. Do not independently file duplicate returns simply because a software workflow is confusing. Ask the preparer how the application, filing deadline and any extension interact.
For broader preparation, use our foreign-owned LLC tax checklist. The individual's ITIN application and the company's information reporting are separate tasks.
After a number is assigned
Keep the notice securely and update the relevant records through legitimate channels. Follow current IRS rules for use and renewal when applicable. Do not share the full number in public posts, email signatures or a general company-profile document.
An assigned ITIN also does not guarantee bank or payment-platform approval. Providers apply their own eligibility and verification requirements. If your immediate need concerns company formation or obtaining an EIN, contact PrimeRegister and separate that work from any personal ITIN engagement.
