Shopify Payments for Non-US Residents: LLC Requirements

A US LLC does not automatically qualify a store for Shopify Payments. Review the owner, physical business address, payout account and verification requirements.

Shopify Payments for non-US residents requires more than a US LLC certificate. The US requirements distinguish an owner's residential address from the business's physical operating address, and they treat individuals differently from registered entities. A passport option for a nonresident representative does not remove the other business requirements.

Start by separating two decisions: using Shopify to run a store and qualifying for Shopify Payments to process its payments.

Shopify Payments for non-US residents: check the right business type

Shopify's US guidance says individuals and sole proprietorships must have the required US residence and identification. For private single-member and multi-member LLC representatives, it describes a passport-verification route for non-US residents, with their genuine overseas residential address entered correctly. The LLC's business details still include an EIN and the physical US address where business operations primarily occur. Shopify's US requirements.

These are separate requirements. Do not read the passport option as “any overseas business becomes eligible after buying an LLC.” If you have no operating presence matching the stated business-address requirement, ask Shopify about your actual arrangement before spending money on incorporation or a mailbox.

A Shopify store is not the same as Shopify Payments

Shopify Payments availability depends on the business's country and eligibility. Where it is unavailable for the country or category, Shopify directs merchants to third-party payment providers. Check the supported-country guidance.

Before selecting a US structure, compare the available routes for your existing business. A second company brings ongoing costs that may outweigh the benefit of a particular checkout option.

Write down the provider you intend to use, its account country, the entity receiving payments and the payout account. Avoid making separate assumptions in the store settings, formation order and bank application.

Prepare a truthful document map

Use this planning table to organise the application rather than to guess which document will be accepted.

Question Record to prepare
Who is the seller? Legal company name and formation record
Who owns and represents it? Ownership details and genuine identity records
Where does the owner live? Actual residential information
Where does the business operate? Facts and evidence matching the requested business-address category
What does the store sell? Product pages, fulfilment explanation and customer policies
Where will payouts arrive? Account-holder and supported transfer details

If you are unsure which address is being requested, clarify the field before entering it. Our business-address guide explains why an agent, mailbox and operating location are not interchangeable.

Resolve EIN and name mismatches from the source records

Compare the name and tax information in the application with the actual IRS confirmation. Avoid repeatedly changing punctuation or dropping parts of a registered name without checking the instructions and source document.

Keep both the state formation record and IRS confirmation available. They serve different purposes, and a screenshot of an application you submitted is not necessarily the same as a confirmation issued by the agency.

If you need to recover the IRS record, use the EIN confirmation letter guide before ordering a replacement EIN unnecessarily. Ask support to explain which record the verification failure concerns.

Confirm payout-account compatibility

Do not assume every account with US routing details works for every payment provider. Confirm the required currency, account type and transfer capability with Shopify and the account provider before selecting it.

Keep the account-holder identity consistent with the business arrangement. A friend's account, a personal account used without the provider's permission, or an unrelated company's details can create a separate verification problem.

Use the non-resident business banking guide as a preparation checklist, then apply the actual Shopify Payments requirements.

Complete verification before relying on customer cash

Follow the setup checklist and enable the security steps required for payouts. Shopify notes that payouts may remain on hold until two-step authentication is activated. Shopify Payments setup guidance.

Do not treat a store going live as proof that account review has finished. Check the admin notices and confirm whether there are outstanding document requests, payout restrictions or fulfilment holds.

If an account is placed on hold, follow the specific notice rather than uploading unrelated files. Shopify explains that verification requests can affect account availability. Account-hold guidance.

Example: a founder selling from abroad

Suppose an overseas founder wants to open a US LLC solely to enable Shopify Payments. The founder can provide a passport and EIN but has not established an operating arrangement matching the US business-address requirement.

The sensible next step is a provider eligibility review, not a purchase of a “guaranteed approval” address. The founder compares available payment providers for the real business and forms the company only if the full structure makes sense.

Keep the store ready after approval

Maintain accurate product descriptions, delivery expectations and refund practices. Payment providers can assess more than the initial documents; Shopify describes continuing evaluation of business practices and risk. Shopify risk-evaluation guidance.

Record sales, refunds, fees and payouts in the company books. Review the ecommerce LLC guide for responsibilities beyond checkout setup.

Frequently asked questions

Can a non-US resident use a passport for Shopify Payments verification?
The US requirements describe a passport option for non-US-resident representatives of specified registered business types. Correct residence information and all other business requirements still apply.
Does a US LLC automatically qualify my store for Shopify Payments?
No. Entity documents, people, business location, payout arrangements and the actual activity remain subject to the provider’s requirements.
Is an overseas residential address the same as the business address?
No. The owner’s home and the company’s operating location are different facts and can have different documentation requirements.
Can I use Shopify without Shopify Payments?
Depending on the store’s country and available integrations, a third-party payment provider may be an option. Check current supported providers for the real business location.
What should I do if verification fails?
Read the specific notice, compare the requested details with the original records and ask Shopify Support about the exact mismatch. Do not invent an address or change the business type inaccurately.
